When children with Autism are oversensitive or overreactive to sensory experiences, it’s called hypersensitivity. These children might cover their ears when they hear loud noises, or eat only foods with a certain texture.

Being Barefoot and Autism – When someone is undersensitive to their environment, they might use a weighted blanket, continually rub their arms and legs on things, chew on items or go barefoot.

This sensory input helps in staying focus.

My son, Grant uses his ribbon as a form of self-stimulation or “stimming”. This coping mechanism helps him deal with his thoughts and feelings – when he feels anxious or overwhelmed.
